Climate, Nature, and Biodiversity WorkstreamAdvancing Climate Action and Nature-Positive Business Transformation in India
Climate, Nature, and Biodiversity Workstream
The Climate, Nature & Biodiversity Workstream of UN Global Compact Network India (UN GCNI) is a strategic initiative designed to support Indian businesses in translating sustainability commitments into practical, measurable, and scalable action. Anchored in the principles of responsible business, this workstream seeks to accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon, climate-resilient, and nature-positive economy by integrating climate action, biodiversity stewardship, ESG governance, and sustainable value-chain transformation into corporate strategy and operations.
India stands at a critical juncture where climate risks, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation are increasingly influencing economic resilience, business continuity, and sustainable development pathways, therefore the workstream aims to strengthen corporate sustainability leadership, foster innovation, enhance environmental accountability, and create scalable models for collective impact across industries. High-impact sectors such as manufacturing, energy, infrastructure, transportation, agriculture, healthcare, and supply chains will be central to the initiative’s engagement strategy.
The workstream is closely aligned with the global priorities articulated under the United Nations Global Compact Strategy 2026–2030, which emphasizes urgent and credible business action to address the interconnected crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and systemic sustainability risks. The UN Global Compact global strategy calls for a decisive shift from sustainability pledges toward measurable, value-chain-level outcomes and encourages businesses to play a transformative role in achieving the 1.5°C climate goal, enabling just transition, advancing nature-positive business practices, and strengthening ESG accountability and integrity.
In alignment with this global vision, the Workstream focuses on:
- Accelerating credible climate mitigation and adaptation action
- Promoting biodiversity-integrated and nature-positive business models
- Supporting ESG integration and responsible governance
- Enabling sector-specific sustainability transition pathways
- Strengthening value-chain and MSME engagement
- Building collaborative multi-stakeholder partnerships for large-scale impact
The workstream also aligns with India’s national sustainability priorities and flagship programmes, including the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), Mission LiFE, the National Biodiversity Action Plan, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, and circular economy initiatives. By connecting global frameworks with national priorities, the initiative will help businesses enhance resilience, improve competitiveness, leverage emerging policy opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
